What the federal text says

Since March 22, 2022, a driver who cannot meet the vision standard in one eye may qualify under the alternative vision standard: the better eye must reach 20/40 or better with a field of at least 105 degrees in the horizontal meridian, plus color recognition; the vision deficiency must be stable; and the driver must have had time to adapt. An eye specialist completes the Vision Evaluation Report, form MCSA-5871, and the medical exam must begin within 45 days of the specialist signing it. Certification under this standard is annual, and a first-time qualifier must pass a road test (§391.31) before driving — an employer-administered test, waived for drivers who have operated under the standard or the old exemption within the prior 3 years. There is no federal vision exemption program anymore — it was replaced by this standard in 2022.

What that means for you

One bad eye is not the end of a career. It is a defined federal pathway with one form, one deadline (45 days), annual exams, and — the first time only — a road test.

What moves the outcome

Sequence matters: see the eye specialist first, get MCSA-5871 signed, and book the medical exam so it begins inside the 45-day window. The kit lays out the full order of operations and the road-test rules.

Which mode is this?

This question is decided by the federal text itself. The verdict above is computed from the cited words — your examiner is bound by the same text.

Only a certified medical examiner on the National Registry can certify you. FreightVerdict reads the published federal standards — it does not certify, diagnose, or treat, and nothing here is medical advice.
